Then the disciples approached Jesus in private and said, “Why could we not drive it out?” He said to them “Because of your little faith. Amen, I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard see, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move.”
Your disciples had come back from their first mission, my Jesus, excited by their success. Since then they had witnessed the feeding of the thousands and seen you walk on water through the storm to rescue them. Still, they lacked faith.
I wonder if they felt crushed when they failed to cast out a demon after their return. Were you disappointed in them? Had they begun to think that they had mastered you lessons and were on their own?
You had wanted to take them to a quiet place to rest and be further instructed, but everywhere the people pressed against you. They had no opportunity to replenish their spirits. Their faith was not even as much as a mustard seed.
If their faith was so slight, Lord, what chance is there for us? “Oh, Lord, I do believe; help my unbelief.” In your mercy, strengthen me.
Throughout the Gospels you remind us that we must participate in order to experience your healing. Nothing is impossible, but we must be open to your grace. Let me come away with you and learn from you. Nourish my faith.
