And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his native place and in his own house.” And he did not work many mighty deeds there because their lack of faith.

(Matthew 13:57-58)

Lord, we are so arrogant. We cannot understand that a person we know, someone we consider no greater than ourselves, can accomplish anything. We expect great works only from those who are beyond us. How could a prophet arise in our own neighborhood?

In previous incidents, you commended those you healed for their faith. Here in your own region, their lack of faith prevents them from receiving miracles. After you multiplied the loaves and fishes, you had to leave because the people wanted to make you king. Now, they take offense.

Open our eyes, Lord. Take away the pride that blinds us. Let us look for you in those who serve you and recognize them as your instruments. Let us thank you for everyone who touches our lives. Give us faith to see you in ordinary places, events and people.
